Product Description

?Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.?

Long before his conservative manifesto Liberty and Tyranny became a #1 New York Times bestseller, Mark R. Levin's love for his country was instilled in him by his father, Jack E. Levin. At family dinners, Jack would share his bountiful knowledge of American history and, especially, the inspiration of Abraham Lincoln.

The son of immigrants, Jack Levin is an American patriot who responded with deep personal emotion to Lincoln's call for liberty and equality. His admiration for the great Civil War president inspired him to personally design and produce a beautiful volume, enhanced with period illustrations and striking battlefield images by Matthew Brady and other renowned photographers of the era, that brings to life the words of Lincoln's awe-inspiring response to one of the Civil War's costliest conflicts.

Now Jack Levin's loving homage to the spirit of American freedom is available in an essential edition that features his original foreword as well as a touching new preface by his son, Mark Levin. In this way, Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address Illustrated celebrates the passing of patriotic pride and historical insight from generation to generation, from father to son.

The day following the dedication of the National Soldier's Cemetery at Gettysburg, Edward Everett, who spoke before Lincoln, sent him a note saying: ?Permit me to express my great admiration for the thoughts expressed by you, with such eloquent simplicity and appropriateness, at the consecration of the cemetery. I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes.?

Lincoln wrote back to Everett: ?In our respective parts yesterday, you could not have been excused to make a short address, nor I a long one. I am pleased to know that in your judgement the little I did say was not entirely a failure.?

2 out of 5 stars Not much to it.

The words are timeless. Perhaps the most famous speech in American history. But this little book doesn't offer much else. I was hoping for more than some handsome graphics. It would have been better with more historical background, maybe more facts about Lincoln, the war, the battle, etc. than given in the book. This book is more about Levin and the author, his father. That's interesting in itself but not nearly as much as Lincoln and the speech.

5 out of 5 stars abraham lincolns gettysburg address illustrated

quick easy read it makes it easy to understand a large piece of history in a very interesting way.

5 out of 5 stars Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address - Illustrated

Very interesting small book with the full text of the Gettsburg address -- very easy to read. The historical pictures shown throughout this little book really help bring the sense of the times to the reader and why the Gettysburg address was so important. This historical narratives are enlightening. This is not a "politically oriented" book, but one that focuses on our history. Great little book for the coffee table. Can be read by all ages.

5 out of 5 stars History

This is a great little book. Amazing pictures and it brings to life the words of a great and humble man. The preface by the author's son is touching. I love to read it over and over!!

5 out of 5 stars A true leader

I admire President Lincoln as a true leader who was able to "keep all the balls in the air" while under tremendous stress comming at him from all sides. The treachery of politics, the domestic grief from the loss of his son, a wife with mental and emotional issues, and of course the Civil War. This self educated lawyer did not rely on poll results to tell him what was right and what was wrong. He did the right thing. He up held the Constitution and his understanding of what our founding fathers did and why is evident in this address.
The book is a beautifull tribute to the sactfices of all the Americans made to keep this nation in tack. A great keep sake. JimW
