 Good Choice
Greenfield is one of the three major general surgery reference textbooks. It is similar to Harrison's in its completeness and level of detail. It is a reference for both experienced clinicians in practice and trainees at a Resident Physician level. The style of this book is mostly text with a few images to supplement the text as needed. I highly recommend the text for people who are interested in surgery or members of a surgical residency due to it's long useful shelf-life in your professional library.  Not the best core surgical textbook
Many typos found throughout the pages and overall poorly written chapters. The exception is the vascular chapters which are helpful. I would recommend Sabiston over Greenfield as a core surgical text. Heavily detailed, sometimes without a point
Overall, the breadth and depth of this text was very good. There is no doubt that if one seeks to understand the basic principles as well as clinical application of general surgery, this text is an excellent addition to any surgical library.
The trauma, vascular, and most GI sections are fairly well written. Though each chapter is quite lengthy, there is a lack of uniform length and clarity from chapter to chapter which makes the reading style somewhat difficult. At times, chapter authors regurgitate statistics and major findings to provide an "evidence-based text," Unfortunately, the dizzying array of numbers and references are incohesive without major conclusions being drawn by the chapter authors. It's easy to find oneself at the end of a 30 page chapter and asking, "so what were the major take -home points?" Though many chapters emphasize basic science relevance, a balance to the clinical side is at times lacking, and leaves the house officer with unsatisfied experience.
Overall, though, the information is plentiful. At times the reading is verbose - but then perhaps that's the point of this text.
Best Surgery book you can get
The best book you can ever get in General surgery. If you really want to enjoy surgery while you are reading, get Greenfield's. The sub specialty sections are awesome as well, you don't have to look elsewhere when you get this book. general surgery
