Couldn't complete half the lessons...
After finding several options required to finish lessons grayed out or missing altogether I decided put the book away, shelve Microsoft, and move onto Cisco certification. Whether it's the book or me not being able to follow directions I'm having much better success working towards my Cisco certifications.
Great book ... but too much typos and errors.
I've been positively impressed by this book, but the high amount of typos and errors, especially in command examples and command parameters is not acceptable in a book that is the official exam reference. A more rigorous review would have been welcome. The book is however very interesting and will help seasoned Win2003 admins to refresh their skillset and to prepare for Windows 2008. Don't forget to check and print out the errata from Microsoft Support.
Get's the job done but with lots of errors
This book will help you to pass the test but you might have a frustrating experience with it along the way.
If you visit the errata site, you will find a large number of posted errors, some of which are confirmed by the authors. There are also a lot of other errors that have not been confirmed by the authors. This is frustrating because you have to be on a constant lookout of wrong information as you study this text and if you're not familiar with the content, how do you know if the unconfirmed errors are legit or not?
Despite these misgivings, this is probably still the best training book out there. Although, I think it should be used along with other materials.
Exactly what I needed!
Very good at going over the major concepts of AD. I have a solid background in eDirectory/NetWare but knew there were some differences in tree design as well as how certain objects were used differently between the two directories. Even if you did not have directory experience I think this book gets you up and running very quickly. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.
Pretty Good Book
I wanted to wait to give this review until after I took the 70-640 now 83-740 exam. Well I just took it and passed. This book was very well put together as far as topics and how they were covered. I do have to agree there are a few typos that could have been fix before putting to print, but by the end of the book I just got use to it; no big deal. The labs are great, a must if you plan to take the exam, but there were some of the labs that require command line or small scripts that I could not get to work. Overall this book is a very good purchase. It covers things in the exam and things you would need to know in the work world. The only reason I give it four stars is because of the misprints, no 2008 server eval software, and it really is not a complete solution for taking the exam, but what book is.
