Newt Gingrich Helps us in Rediscovering God in America
In a world with disappearing values and with so many turning their backs on God, it was enlightening to read of America's religious roots in Newt Gingrich's book Rediscovering God in America. He starts off by acknowledging the fact that America started off as a country that "understands that our unalienable right come from God." However, over time the government has written God out of our American history. In this book he takes us on a photo walking tour to the monuments and places that have religious connotations throughout our nation's capital.
The photos in this book are simply beautiful. This would make a great coffee table book to browse through as well as a conversation starter. I enjoyed the introduction, even if the reading was a little tedious! I was very impressed with the amount of knowledge for each location he wrote about. I would highly recommend this book for a history buff, especially someone with religious interests.
A walking tour around the capital
I received this book (after a snafu that caused a delay, hence the less than timely review) as a review copy from Thomas Nelson booksellers.
Since I am not exactly a fan of Newt Gingrich's, I approached this book with a bit of caution. Thankfully, the right wing rhetoric mainly takes place in the introduction and conclusion, and I found the rest of the book quite enjoyable and informative.
The main reason I was interested in this book is because we are planning a visit to DC this year, and I thought reading this book beforehand might give us some things to look for and a "plan of attack" in what to see in what order. To this end, the book fulfilled my expectations.
The photographs in the book, by Mr. Gingrich's wife Callista, are quite well done and complement the text. The directions and map to duplicate the tour (in the back of the book) are appreciated.
If you are interested in how America expressed its faith in some of our most public places, then this is a good book to get. While some of the references to the Christian (and in a couple of instances, even non-Christian) faith are well known and obvious, Mr. Gingrich includes some that I would have not known or looked for. I could have done without the "secular left media-intellectual-legal elite" attack talk in the intro, but points like the irony of the Supreme Court starting each session with the words "God save the United States and this honorable Court" while getting within one vote of declaring the phrase "under God" unconstitutional are well taken.
Great American history!
In this book, Newt Gingrich explores the subject of the role of God and the Christian religion in American history. He accomplishes this by taking us on a stroll through Washington DC. As he visits the memorials and monuments that most of us are familiar with, he explains the purpose of each monument and the deeper spiritual, Christian purpose behind each memorial.
Rediscovering GOD
The Progressives....the Moderates.....the Ultra-anythings in Washington need to be reminded that tis great nation was created upon Biblical principles. This book certainly brings that fact home. Very persuasive. Very compelling. I gave FIVE copies to my adult children for Christmas. They're heading for D.C. for two of the coming marches on the capitol (Tea Party/9-12 etc.) and will have this expert guide for where to find these special places.
Great addition to an American History study
I received a free copy of Rediscovering God in American by Newt Gingrich, from Thomas Nelson as a book reviewer.
Like it or not our nation was founded on Biblical principals that are etched in the very
monuments of our nation. After taking the tour of our national monuments through this book there can be no denying that yes, our founders knew Who it was that gave each man their freedoms and "unalienable rights."
I found this book very educational and fascinating. I doubt many people realize just how many of our great founders and leaders over the years relied on, and thanked God.
My copy did not have any colored pictures but I know the newest edition does have colored photos which really makes the book come to life for the reader.
We will be using this book in our homeschool to reinforce that even if current political correctness says we are no longer a Christian nation, we can stand firm knowing that this country and our founders held a different, higher standard.
