Best "Starter" set for Godzilla fans
I got this set several months back. I've always like the "Godzilla" type movies and he is the King. The set is hands down a super bargine for anyone who enjoyed these Saturday movies. You get a nice box with most of the well knowns like "Mothra" and "Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster". Best of all is each disc has both American and Japaneese versions. The video on the Japaneese version is so much better. It's like comparing a DVD to VHS plus widescreen to boot.
The Supreme Godzilla Set
All the movies in this set have humongous improvements over the last time Classic Media did a box set. In this set you get
Godzilla,Godzilla Raids Again,Ghidorah the 3 headed monster,Monster Zero,Godzilla's Revenge and Terror of Mechagodzilla. Without going into all that detail about each movie, which many of you have seen or read something about , I will keep this brief and just good a basic overview,a general thought. All have both Japanese & USA versions, the transfers are just fantastic. Everything save for Godzilla & Godzilla Raids again are in letterbox format. A great set, great packaging. Yes this was a double dip for those of us who bought these earlier separately but I wanted the box so I made some trades and made some money so I could get the box. This highly recommended :)
Mediocre
Godzilla is a good film for the whole family to enjoy. The lack of blood and gore make it suitable for the young'uns (though you may want to tell them not to say some of those naughty little words) straight up to the elderly. As for the film itself, what kept it from being a classic monster film and one that could be forgotten in a few years is the lack of intelligence of the people. To start, the poor old fisherman in the beginning he stands their so long waiting on godzilla to turn him into a fishersmear I thought he had died standing there with his hands on his face. The next example of sheer stupidity (the next example I'm going to tell you about, not the next example of unsmartness in the film by the way) is our nations army/air force, they did so many stupid things I thought it was a joke, for instance, at one point they had a group of men armed with M-16's,yes,you heard right,no,this is not a joke they had M-16's to fight a 300 foot tall monster they brought M-16's,why, those things barely work on people. Ok, the last bit of dumbness I will address, are our next country neighbors the frenchman, when Nick, and that french fella were trying to get clearance into the city, a guard stops and asks him, why they were there and who they were Nick talks to him instead of the French guy (when the French guy should have spoken by the way)the guard blows up at Nick because he's just a soldier and not a high ranking officer (he's actually neither but)anyway, the guard asks frenchie overhere could was something wrong with him and he says in a fake southern accent "Why, no sir." now my question is if he could fake an American accent why didn't he do it to begin with? I could go on and on but I won't. Oh one more thing if it sounds like I don't like the its not true I love the French. These French in Godzilla just didn't play intelligent parts. Cest'la vie(whatever that means)!
Giant Monsters Attack!
For my birthday, my lovely wife gave me the gift of Godzilla -- The Godzilla Collection, in fact, a deluxe box set featuring seven films from the classic era of Toho Studio's most famous giant monster. These deluxe DVDs include both the original Japanese versions and the English dubbed versions, plus more than 20 hours of bonus materials, with commentary tracks, featurettes, photo galleries, and more. As a kid, I really never saw any of the Godzilla films all the way through, so this really has been a journey of discovery.
Of special note is the beautiful two-disc edition of Gojira (1954) / Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956). The original film, rarely seen outside of Japan until its 50th anniversary, is a haunting, almost lyrical post-war tale of heartbreak and loss. Compared to that, it's hard not to see the "Americanized" version as relatively clumsy, edited into a more straight-ahead creature feature that shoehorned in scenes of Raymond Burr pretending he was in the film. Each version has its own commentary track to bring historical context.
The box set also includes the sequel Godzilla Raids Again, which matches the so-so original 1955 Japanese film with the almost bizarre 1959 American recut; the 1964 feature Mothra vs. Godzilla; the 1964 monster mash Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (with no less than four mega-monsters); 1965's Invasion of Astro-Monster; the 1969 kiddie flick All Monsters Attack; and 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla. I Loved this movie
If you have not seen the movie DO NOT READ! The movie opens to the atom bob testing done on a certain island. The wildlife just walks around and does not know the danger flying above. All of a sudden boom! A mushroom cloud rises on a nearby island. After the nuclear explosion one lizard egg appears to remain. Leading off to a two year reign as my favorite movie until x-men came along. The movie is about a hybrid of lizardous creature name Gojira (Godzilla) The lizard romps through a middle America type town on its way to new york. I liked this movie because the effects are great the plot rocks and the new lizard is awesome looking. The babies look and act like velociraptors and godzilla like a fish eating tyrannosaurus rex. Seriously folks, The critics are wrong and this movie is good if you pay attention. You will like the movie!
