Great Instructions!
The author does a great job of explaining over 30 decorative techniques in a step-by-step format. I definitely recommend this book for beginners in applique, embroidery, embellishment, crazy quilting, etc. What I especially like is that this book is about technique and not about specific projects. At first I considered returning this book because I am already familiar with most of the techniques featured, however, I found the beautiful pictures of the finished quilts to be very inspiring. Overall, I am happy with this book and highly recommend it to those who are new to these decorative techniques.
This little compendium kicks crazy quilting up a notch!
Any book that has "quilt" and "embellishment" in it, now THAT'S a book I would take a second look at. And buy!! I love the idea of crazy quilting with its fancy stitchery, but I also like the concepts of layering and 3D. This book definitely kicks crazy quilting up a notch, and really gets my imagination zinging.
There are 33 "chapters" here. I use the quotes because some are only a page or two long. Topics include the expected (fabric crayons, embroidery, photo images) and the unexpected (mirrors, charms, found objects, tassels). My favorite unexpected topic is "trapping", where embellishments are arranged under a mesh.
Because each chapter is brief, you get a quick overview of a lot of different methods, yet you have enough detail to completely make a project without getting overwhelmed. The introductory chapter on tools/methods is similarly brief, and gives just enough info on tools, fabrics, stabilizers, and threads.
The only somewhat negative thing I can mention is that the overall dimensions of the book are small at just under 9 inches square. There is a ton of info and detail packed into these 128 pages, and larger pictures would have been greatly beneficial. This publication could have been a real knock-out at a larger size, but as it is, it is a valuable compendium without being encyclopedic.
If you love fabric as much as you do working with found objects, I think you will be pleased to own this book.
