Editorial Reviews:
Cloves from Madagascar, Jamaican allspice, Indonesian cinnamon and nutmeg, Caribbean key limes, Spanish clementines and Floridian Valencia oranges are just a few of the ingredients that create the distinct, delicious, and memorable flavors of Salem Baking Company s Moravian Cookies. Now, The Vintage Taste Cookbook introduces a new chapter in the story of Moravian Cookies. Each of the recipes in the first cookbook from Salem Baking re-imagines Moravian Cookies as ingredients. In some recipes, the cookies star as the signature flavor; in others, they act as a subtle complement or a finishing touch. To provide inspired recipes that showcase the versatility of this new ingredient, Salem Baking enlisted one of the brightest, most creative chefs in our part of the country. Jared Lee is a chef at Noble s Grille in Winston-Salem, NC, one of the finest restaurants in the Southeast (where Salem Baking is located). Lee specializes in the combination of ingredients that produce flavors ranging from the sublime to the intense. A North Carolina native, Lee has had a lifelong immersion in the tradition of Moravian Cookies. He has created a wide range of recipes and organized them based on being relatively simple to prepare, perfect for any evening, to those you may reserve for weekends and special occasions. With more than 100 featured recipes, food lovers will find something for every palate, including dishes such as Roasted Butternut Squash Bisque with Crème Fraiche and Moravian Spice Cookies, Prosciutto Wrapped Figs with Moravian Spice Cookies and Chevre Stuffing, Herb Roasted Chicken with Chestnut and Moravian Spice Cookie Stuffing, Moravian Key Lime Cookie Crusted Grouper with Gemstone Potatoes Confit, Roasted Asparagus and Lemon Caper Butter Sauce, White Chocolate Mousse and Moravian Lemon Cookie Trifle, Moravian Spice Cookie Crumb Cake, and many other decadent and memorable recipes. No meal would be quite perfect without the perfect wine. For special tips and wine pairing recommendations designed to enhance the flavors in every exquisite bite of each dish, the company enlisted world-renowned sommelier, Christopher Sawyer. A Sonoma, CA-based wine expert, Sawyer is a well-known wine critic, journalist and sommelier who travels the world in search of the very best wines. Salem Baking is proud to introduce their legendary Moravian Cookies as an ingredient that brings many of the world's most cherished flavors to your kitchen.

OK if you live in Winston-Salem
This is something of a disappointment. Since I live in Winston-Salem, I thought a local cookbook would be pretty interesting. Unfortunately I didn't realize that every recipe included cookies from Salem Baking (Better known as Dewey's). (It's kind of like those advertisement sections in the pathetic Southern Living Magazine, where you finally realize that you paid for a ten page ad, instead of really good recipes.) Yes I saw it for sale in one of the "Holiday Dewey's Stores", but I thought it might just include local recipes.
For anyone outside of the Winston-Salem area this could be a pretty expensive proposition. A tube of spice cookies costs about $9.00. Add in shipping and you'd have some pretty expensive dishes.
If you purchase this book, my recommendation would be to do a google search for Moravian Cookie recipes, and create your own cookies. Or at least determine what spices you might include, without adding these cookies.
