Tragic
I just finished volume 8. The whole series is amazing. This volume in particular is just messed up and tragic. It almost brought me to tears. After finishing it, I am tempted to stop reading the book because of how it ended, but that would be an injustice to Kirkman's story telling ability, it was an amazing story, just very tragic.
Back on Track
I'll admit, for a while, I was worried that the series was stuck in a rut from whence it would never escape. Paperback #8, Made to Suffer, laid those fears to rest. This book is the perfect reason to stay into the series. Longtime fans will be glad to see the series making some serious progress. It goes without saying, but don't get this if you haven't read the previous 7 paperbacks. I recommend getting the big hardback collections, as they offer some cool bonuses and contain about 3 of these trade paperbacks. All in all, a must buy for the Walking Dead fan!
What an apt title: "Made to Suffer" The most gut-wrenching of the series so far...
Well, having made it through 8 paperbacks of this excellent zombie apocalypse graphic tale, I can say it's gotten better and better and worse. Better cause of the continuing escalation of dread. Better because of continuing deepening of character and conflict. Worse because the zombie enemy, while persisting and ever-threatening and ever-hungry, now takes a backseat to a raging, sociopathic, depraved leader of a human enemy: The Governor in his post-Michonne-mutilation-spree fury.
The Governor is the antithesis of Rich and many of his nobler band of survivors, who really just want to survive with as much of their humanity and community intact as possible. No, this Governor holds power with the darkest, most two-faced tyrannical and ruthless means and desires possible. I dare you not to puke up a bit at the scenes with his "daughter."
It's a helluva showdown in this volume. The cost will be tremendous, as it must when both sides are motivated and well-armed and will not give up.
It's really hard to see some characters go. Very hard. But now one is left wondering what new horrors (and depths of courage and conflict) await the survivors.
It's actually dramatically a good move--even if it breaks your heart and turns your stomach. The prison has been the setting for a good space now. It's time to see what else is out there in a land gone very, very wrong.
It can only get worse, I imagine. But I'm in for the awful ride.
A terrific series for zombie fans, or postapocalyptic fans. It's not about colorful artwork, though the visuals are solid. It's about a story. A horror story. And it's topnotch.

Ok, so you've read Kirkman. Walking Dead? Invincible? Yah,I get it. Me too. But I specifically am an Undead fan. So I bought this book. I won't say anything about it BUT that this will turn your little zombie universe upside down. So stop pretending like you are reading this and just buy the damn book. You'll thank me, I know.

I heard about this series on boingboing.net and have been hopeless addicted since. I'm not a comic book person at all but I did like zombie movies growing up so I was intrigued by it. The thing about the series is that the zombies are almost superfluous. The story is really about the breakdown of society and how both the best and worst in us come out in that scenario. In EVERY issue, I have literally gasped upon turning at least one page. The writing is always excellent and the art very good but also consistent. It irks me when they change artist and the styles are vastly different from one issue to the next (this is a major reason I'm not a comic person). If you are interested in not just a comic book but an examination of the human condition at the end of civilization, read these. Now. You never know when the zombies will come for you.
