AD for learning RX
This book was written by learning RX and is mostly an add, providing info you can get if you visit a store. I did visit a store and saw marketing books all over the office. While thier are some good activities in the book and at the location my trust has been broken. I am so dissapointed that this did not talk about all kinds of cognitive training but instead pretty much said "go to learning RX if you want to improve your brain"
A Framework for Analyzing Learning Difficulties
This book takes an interesting perspective on solving learning difficulties - one that draws on cognitive information processing theory. It is well-written and clearly develops the link between academic performance and cognitive skills.
A major contribution is in providing a conceptual framework that parents can use to analyze why their child is not performing up to potential. Giving parents a way to think about this issue, and then offering a way to test hypotheses about causes (through testing), is just good science.
I would recommend this book to parents of children with learning difficulties. But I would also recommend it to educators and administrators, who could benefit from a richer perspective in assessing whether a student's poor academic performance is due to laziness or cognitive-skill deficiencies (which apparently can be fixed).
Hope for children...and adults...who struggle with learning
Dr. Gibson's book is a great book for all parents to read. It is understandable and a quick read for people on the go. Dr. Gibson explains that most learning difficulties are the result of underlying cognitive weaknesses. Cognitive skills testing can identify the root causes of learning difficulties, and brain skills can be boosted with appropriate training.
The independent research paper in Appendix C validates Dr. Gibson's bold claims that dramatic gains can be made quickly and cost effectively.
Although Dr. Gibson's book is written primarily for families with struggling children, LearningRx cognitive skills training works effectively for people of all ages.
Knowledge is Power
As both an educator and a parent, I believe the most important thing I can have is knowledge and understanding. There are so many questions about a struggling student. There are so many questions about a student that makes good grades, but still seems to work too hard. Unlock the Einstein Inside answers these questions and many more.
When there is an understanding of the cause of a problem, then there is hope and a way to change the problem. Everyone is weary of knowing there is a problem but continuing to only mask them temporarily before they return bigger and stronger.
Dr. Gibson has explained the CAUSE and then offers an answer. I am encouraged and excited to know that parents, teachers, and students can now make a change and take control of the future.
Fascinating
I have spent the last 17 years of my career helping struggling students (1000s of them) as an owner/operator of a national tutoring franchise. Historically, we would help kids by brushing up on their reading and math skills. We had a good program, but it now seems like we were attacking the symptoms, not the underlying causes.
I wish I had known about this option years ago. Especially for kids who have tried other options for more than 30-60 days, and not seen the results parents were hoping for.
Each student is unique in their own way, of course. I would recommend that parents research all their options carefully, but this is one program that warrants a long look.
