My kids just don't get this one.
Though I really like the idea behind this book, my kids just weren't getting it. The book is about a father leaning to use positive re-enforcement with his child after getting no where using punishments. He gets the idea from the trainer of Fat Freddie, a penguin who can do some amazing stuff. The message in this book is more useful for the parents then the child. I don't see how a child could identify with the parent's struggle to discipline and even if they could, they would have a hard time challenging their parent to use positive instead of negative re-enforcement. (When you were 10, would you have told your mother or father that they should change the way they discipline you?). My kids were more interested in the penguin itself rather then the message of using positive reinforcement. Over all, it is a cute book with a great concept but falls short on providing an interesting message to children.
